Amid Cape Town’s ever-changing culinary scene, where trends come and go, Lion’s Bread stands out as a steadfast celebration of craft, community and thoughtful baking. Founded in 2025 in Bo-Kaap by Jack Green and Mia Penn, it began as a small garage bakery with a simple mission: to bake bread that is good in every sense of the word. While they are a new bakery, from the very beginning they have been guided by principles that go beyond fleeting popularity.
From the very first loaf, Lion’s Bread has been about intention. Using only flour, water and salt, every bread is leavened through slow, wild fermentation and made with a diversity of locally sourced grains. The result is bread that is more digestible, more nutritious and far more flavourful than your average loaf. But this bakery is about more than food. It is about people, community and the planet.
Lion’s Bread works exclusively with producers who share their ethics. They aim to regenerate where possible, minimise waste and support initiatives that address food insecurity. Every loaf is a quiet act of care, connecting the hands of farmers, bakers and the communities that gather to share it.
Their Rose Street café is a beloved corner of Bo-Kaap, a place where bread and coffee meet sunlit mornings. Behind the scenes, their main bakery on Clare Street is a space of energy and precision, where bakers shape dough and oversee every stage of the slow fermentation process. Soon, their Bree Street café will open with a more food-forward menu, continuing their commitment to community and culinary excellence.
It was this dedication to integrity, craftsmanship and community that drew Siafu to Lion’s Bread when conceptualizing our 2025 Christmas campaign. As we explored ideas for the season, we were inspired to feature brands that share our values: celebrating artisans, prioritizing sustainability and creating experiences that connect people to craft and story. Lion’s Bread embodies these principles perfectly.
Our collaboration came to life as part of The Corner Store, a curated Cape Town space bringing together Lion’s Bread, SIAFU, The Joinery, Dear Rae and The LOOKBOOK nook by House and Leisure. Here, each brand contributes to a shared vision of thoughtful, intentional design and craft. Together, we created a campaign that celebrates community, skill and the joy of bringing people together around the simple but extraordinary acts of making, sharing and gifting.
Lion’s Bread reminds us that true craftsmanship is measured not just by skill, but by values, care and connection. This Christmas, as you break bread or unwrap a gift from a thoughtful maker, there is a story behind it, a story of hands, hearts and the small acts that make a meaningful life. Our collaboration with Lion’s Bread was a celebration of exactly that, the power of craft to inspire, connect and bring warmth to the season.
